TEHERAN B

Object of the contest: multistorey building
Client: Benetton Group
Location: Teheran, Iran
Contest result: will be announced

The design brief listed the gross area for each floors: 1200sqm for the ground floor and first floor, 900sqm for the next three floors and finally, 675sqm for the last three floors. This request led us to the development of the concept, as we have translated the decreased of gross area as a rarefied matter along with the height. The simplest diagram of the concept and the rectangular shape of the plot gave us a very easy-to-use tool: a three dimensional pixel as a basic unit to play with.
Putting these in the context of the city of Teheran and the Iranian traditional elements of living, we came to the conclusion that the most suitable way to approach this project would be to create spaces for users with a high sense of intimacy and privacy but allowing the passer-by to glimpse the richness of the interior space.
The initial arrangement scheme of voids and blocks became more and more complex as we related them with each other in an apparent randomized way. The pixel void unit starts to define spaces and to enrich the experience of living in and arround them. Unifying the voids on horizontal as well as on vertical adds a new perception to the space. From each floor, one can have three dimensional views of the building. The connections between the different users are accomplished through the vertical communication cores. The cantilevered volumes generate intricate light effects and complex spatial relationships. Beside this, the interconnected network of voids ensures natural light and ventilation in the interior spaces.
