MARIBOR
LAYOUT OF THE DRAVA RIVER AREA IN MARIBOR, SLOVENIA
Object of the contest: Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia will be the European Capital of Culture in 2012. Therefore, this competition's purpose is to design an architectural idea for the rearrangement in the length of 1.000 m at both banks of the river Drava with the intent to acquire an outline scheme of the central stage of the European Capital of Culture and for urban regeneration of the city in the next twenty years. Besides the banks of river Drava the embankment includes squares, streets, promenades, green spaces and ports for river vehicles.
Plot: 1.000 m of river banks;
Client: Municipality of Maribor
Location: MARIBOR, SLOVENIA
Our project started by understanding and re-defining the position of the Drava Embankments inside the town. The expanded city of Maribor did not manage to dissolve the river gap into its tissue and today the steep slopes of its embankments separate the two shores of the river. The natural border has a correspondence into the mentality of the inhabitants, therefore two cities coexist today: an old city with his squares and monuments and the new one - industrial, scattered, crossed by modern transport lines. Two cities, two different typologies and two different living styles.
The Drava Embankments represent the opportunity to create a new central place in-between the two cities - to link and merge them. Consequently, we decided to design both embankments (Lent - Pristan and Tabor - Studenci) in an urban manner. The same stone pavement covers both shores and the same design details are used. To create a stronger and evident link we suggest for the new footbridge to be covered with the same stone pavement.
The natural environment will be organized and "urbanized". The green steep slope of Tabr-Studenci promenade which is now a natural obstacle and somehow a waste land will be transformed into a central botanical garden, crossed by a spectacular and comfortable grid of geometrical footpaths. On the other shore, the natural slopes have become steep and unfriendly and do not offer to the pedestrian the opportunity and the pleasure of having comfortable contact with the water. Therefore, we designed on Lent smooth urban beaches, facing south, where people can gather and relax. On the right shore the steep topography forced us to design large steps where people can rest and admire the silhouette of Old Maribor.
