PARCUL LIVADA POSTEI, BRASOV
REDESIGN OF 'LIVADA POSTEI'PARK, BRASOV
WINNER OF THE 2ND PRIZE
Object of the contest: redesigning the public park of Livada Postei, Brasov into a sustainable contemporary park which to become a point of interest in the town and be coherently articulated into the green system of Brasov
Client: The Mayorship of Brasov and Shaeffler Romania
Plot = 2,7ha
Location: Brasov, Romania
Nowadays, the park is part of the green cornice of Omizilor Hill that includes the two medieval towers - The White Tower and the Black Tower - and the Graft brook promenade. The park gained its identity in the moment the villegiature villas were built nearby: a green place - the front garden of the villas and the space crossed by the Royal Promenade - Koningsweg. As time passed by, it was a sunny part of nature free of tall vegetation more than a park, but during the past few years the town put a pressure on antrophomizing.
Our design proposal is based on preserving the natural character of the park, but also bringing it in the cultural life of the town.
The manner in which the park is configured suggests that, at the town's level, nature is a contemplative spectacle in which human intervention is barely perceived. At the visitor's level, nature is a participative spectacle, a puzzle made of details in which dialogue is possible at the sensorial level. The park can be crossed in any direction. The alleys are not strictly defined, they auto-generate as the pedestrians are walking on them in a continuous mapping process on a given support. Social interaction platforms and meditative isolation spaces are organically scattered. One can discover, conquer or ignore them. They become sites through usage, in a personal understanding and reading of the park.
The park is an event site in which anything related and in harmony with nature can happen.
There are no strict functions, no pre-established usage scenarios. The space is free and has the potential to become a scene: it can host any show, organized or spontaneous, just as anyone can use it a platform to express themselves. Sleighing in winter, picnic meeting space or artistic experiment workshop in summer, movie theatre or lighting show support in the evening, the park can be simultaneously or alternatively a scene and a show hall.
The park’s main functions are for relaxing in nature, social interaction and cultural activities generator. The central meadow, as main and dominant feature is left free of furniture in order to promote a usage specific to the natural areas: for picnic, sunbathing, reading, painting or kite playing. The furnishings for sitting are grouped into two categories: linear benches along the alleys and alveolar benches withdrawn into the planted areas for solitary or small group activities (small alveolus), for children playing (big alveolus with interactive playing furniture for kids) or for group games like chess and backgammon (medium alveolus). A main playground with a sculptural installation and a sand box is positioned in front of the Children's Pavilion. Towards the forest, under the trees' protection, is placed a swing area.
The continuity and diversity of the social and cultural activities is assured by the two pavilions which host a workshop space for children and an artistic activity generator.
