Object of the contest: Designing the headquarters of UCMR-ADA on a plot situated on Ostasilor street, in an old and protected area of Bucharest.
The site’s general context is given on one side by the street, which gets its vitality and ambiance from the houses built at the beginning of the 20th century, and on the other side by a group of buildings situated on the plot, in deplorable state and with no interior value, but which have fair preserved facades. Being impossible to recover and adapt these buildings, as they are, to the proposed function, but considering that rescuing the valuable elements is desirable, we proposed a middle way between two radical gestures – demolition and instauration: partially preserving the old facades while adapting a new building/function in this ‘old coat’.
Thus, the street view, composed by the juxtaposition of the two styles, becomes a ‘motto’, integrating the project’s entire essence at conceptual and practical levels: the new architecture pursuing and complementing the old one.
