Object of the contest: Design of the central public space in Sibiel so that the project to become a starting point for the further development of the community and to represent a symbol of its social, architectural, landscape and cultural unity.
Sibiel’s identity is present and it’s not hard to be discovered and understood. It consists of the specific nature, the picturesque of Sibiel river stream, the villagers’ relationship with nature and their codependency, the authentic architecture, the customs, holidays and craftsmanship and, of course, the painting of icons on glass. But beyond the traditions and the existing patrimony, the specific of the area resides in the way of life of the villagers: steady hardworking people with German roots, but more opened, communicative, spontaneous and vague when it comes to their imprint upon the surrounding world.
Maybe from here resides the wish to experiment, to borrow foreign forms and stylistic manifestations which are to be intertwined with the local values and traditions. However, the evolution towards a natural comfort state has brought some aggressions upon the local identity.
Our project tries to give an answer both to the desire for new and progress as well as to preserving the traditional values. There is no permanent solution, in a community everything is constantly transforming, the aim being a sustainable equilibrium.
Living in the country side means simple joys that come from the way in which one relates to nature and its inhabitants. We try to create as many occasions as possible to rediscover them, for visitors and locals, for the young and the old as well. Thus, our project is about the simple joys of life: to watch the river under the bridge, to cool your feet in the stream in a hot summer day, to climb trees, to throw stones into the water, to eat berries picked directly from the source, to talk with friends, to meet people and find out their concerns, to celebrate with the others, to linger on a cup of coffee, to play with your child in the sand pit, to craft something with your own hands, to tender flowers, to play hide-and-seek, to ride the swing, to drink water from the fountain, to make bird houses, to watch and listen insects and birds, to stay in the sun or in the shadow…
