Contest for the redesign of public space in the center of Ramnicu Valcea, Romania
Location: Ramnicu Valcea, Romania; Client: Ramnicu Valcea Municipality; Year: 2012
Object of the contest: redesign of public space in the center of Ramnicu Valcea in order to shape its own identity; achieving a continuous and attractive pedestrian route downtown
In the middle of the town we find a transit square, a functional reminiscence of the old diagonal street. A space where nobody stops and little happens. Square meters of green space with no cultural load, architectural and road cannibalization. We aim to cut through the green space a protected area, a tidy space, a space that appeals to the porch typology found in churches or monasteries in Valcea County. A major and protective space, a stage for urban events. At its basis we propose a comprehensive urban platform: the former square for carriages.
The new topography adapts to the existing landscape, trying to minimize the displacement of land and keeping the memory of the space. Solving the square in “molded-on-the-landscape” terraces creates both easy crossing areas (the North-South relationship and the diagonal) and areas where pedestrians can sit. Around the wall of the park we proposed smooth waterfalls.
